49. Loek Van Mil
Relief Pitcher
Throws: Right
Age: 25
ETA: 2011
Potential: Solid bullpen arm
2010 outlook: Spend time at AA with midseason promotion to AAA
The first thing that stands out about this pitcher from the Netherlands is his height. He is 7’1” which makes him the tallest player in the minor leagues. If Van Mil makes it to the majors, he’d be the tallest player ever to play in the majors! Van Mil throws a fastball that is usually in the mid 90’s (but has been clocked at 99 mph), a slider, and a change-up.
In 2009 he split time at A Fort Myers and AA New Britain. He struck out 28 in 42 innings with an era of 2.86 at Fort Myers and 2.45 at New Britain. He walked 23, which is too many especially in the Twins organization, where they place heavy emphasis on throwing strikes. If he ever wants a change to play in the majors, he’ll have to drop his walk rate. Van Mil likely will amount to nothing, but he will be an interesting player to watch if he ever does make it to the big leagues.
